Lavender needs no real introduction, an evergreen, woody shrub, that grows to around a metre in height. Narrow, slender leaves with various shades of purple to blue coloured flowers. An ornamental version is available in whites and pinks flowers, though not suitable for extracting oil. The entire plant is highly aromatic.
The Lavender oil Spike Spanish type is 100% natural Lavender species it is not so much a boutique oil as it is more economical and suited to a wider range of applications. As the oil is not fine, it has to be rectified (that is distilled twice). Spike oil is more camphoraceous than French Lavender, it is high on cineole linalool and camphor and low on linalyl acetate. It blends well with all camphoraceous oils such as Rosemary and Eucalyptus and is used in medicinal products such as inhalants and embrocations, and is suitable for aromatherapy and all other applications.
Lavender oil has a soothing and calming effect on the nerves, relieving tension, depression, panic, hysteria and nervous exhaustion in general and is effective for headaches, migraines and insomnia. It is also very beneficial for problems such as bronchitis, asthma, colds, laryngitis, throat infections and whooping cough and helps the digestive system deal with colic, nausea, vomiting and flatulence. Apart from that it supports female health, Lavender oil relieves pain when used for rheumatism, arthritis, and muscular aches and pains, especially those associated with sport. On the skin, lavender oil tones and revitalizes and it is useful for all types of skin problems such as abscesses, acne, oily skin, boils, burns, sunburn, wounds, psoriasis, lice, insect bites, stings and also acts as an insect repellent.

Even the Romans who bathed, cooked and scented the air with Lavender, and most likely gave it it's original form of its Latin name -either lavare - to wash, or livendula - livid or bluish.
