Niaouli Essential Oil
(Melaleuca quinquenervia)
  • Product Code: EONIA

Niaouli is commonly used in New Caledonia, distilled from the leaves of the tree, Naiouli is from the same family as Cajeput and Tea Tree. The tree was introduced to Florida, this is the nuisance invasive tree that grows wild in the everglades, as this tree surprisingly has a vigorous re-sprouting mechanism after being burnt in bushfires. Blooming 5 times throughout the year, the trees can live for over 100 years, with some 40 year old trees achieving a truck diameter of 2.7 metres in cultivation.

The name can also be known as 'gomenol', derived from the fact that is used to be shipped from Gomen in the French East Indies. Heralded around the French Polynesian and Caledonia areas as a 'Cure-all'. With a slight reminder of Tea Tree and Eucalyptus, yet milder and gentler even on sensitive skin, the scent isn't as dominating as Tea Tree. This valuable and highly respected tree is regarded amongst its local community up to now, with its traditional use for reducing fever and healing wounds.

A healing, stimulating and refreshing oil, it is commonly used for a wide range of common ailments, such as general aches and pains, poor circulation and rheumatism. In using for skin care, it aids in acne, boils, cuts, spots, ulcers, minor wounds and burns, as well as controlling oily skin and easing insect bites. Helps to reduce some respiratory conditions of asthma, bronchitis, catarrhal conditions, coughs, sinusitis, sore throat and whooping cough. Also helps with winter colds, flus and fevers, and eases cystitis and urinary infection.

FACT :  During various expeditions from England to Australia, of the 18th Century, conducted by Captain Cook on his first voyage with naturalist Joseph Banks and Daniel Carl Solander, there has been some observation of the local community infusing a tea-like beverage and the preparation to treat aches, pains, cuts, infections, small wounds, skin condition, insect bites, respiratory conditions. Notes and specimens were returned to England for further study. It seems that minimal information was recorded of it's history, before it reached Europe during the 17th Century.
