The mandarin - a member of the orange family, is a smaller tree, with a smaller fruit. They originated in China, they are now grown around the world, with the essence being developed in Italy. This mandarin variety, Citrus reticulata, Rutaceae, is the largest and most varied group of edible citrus. Worldwide mandarin production is currently estimated to be in the range of 10-13 million tons.
Mandarins and Tangerines are in the same family, though there are vast differences between the both, besides analytically, also in the perfumery industry, as Mandarin oil has a more perfumery character, which is more similar to Neroli.
Our oil is sourced from Sicily and is the classic type with low limonene, high gamma terpinene and dimethyl anthranilate. Italian Mandarin oils are made from fruits of varying stages of ripeness, they therefore have a wider range of colours, from shades of green, to yellow, and orange to even a red colour. Late season oil is the sweetest and is designated by its red colour, this has the odour of a freshly peeled small mandarin.
