The Myrtus is the flowering shrub/tree of the Myrtaceae family, with 2 recognised species, M.communis (native to the Mediterranean region), and M. nivellei - Saharan Myrtle (native to North Africa). Locations vary between the mountainous and rocky areas which surround the Mediterranean.
This evergreen shrub of 3 - 7 metres is fragrant all over, with white star-like flowers that transform to purplish-blackberry-fruits. The wood produces a gum, which the Greeks considered similar to Myrrh, but only the leaves are distilled to produce the oil. Collection and distillation takes place the same day, in the region of Dalmatia, an old state in Croatia.
Myrtle Oil is said to be beneficial in the regular skin care of oil skin with open pores and mild acne irritations. Also helps in the immune system from the common coughs, colds and flus, aiding the respiratory system, by easing asthma, bronchitis, catarrhal conditions, chronic coughs, and chest complaints - especially for children, as this is a relative mild and suitable oil to use. There have been some health studies that suggest that Myrtle Oil normalises the functioning of the thyroid and ovaries.
Traditionally used by the ancient Egyptians by macerating the leaves in wine to counter fever and infection. The leaves and flowers were also used to create a skin care lotion throughout the 16th century.
