A small bushy native shrub that grows wild and abundantly through New Zealand. Liking areas of acidic and low nutrient soils, from sand dunes to mountainous regions. The branches and leaves are covered in silky white hairs, which release essential oil when rubbed. The word Manuka comes from the Maori term meaning nervousness or anxiety. Manuka is renowned for its use as a tea substitute by sailors visiting Aotearoa, hence the name 'tea-tree' became known, although Manuka is quite different from Tea-Tree.
Researched reports have indicated that Manuka is at least twice as effective as Australian Tea Tree oil against gram positive bacteria (staphlococcus and streptococcus). Manuka has a strong natural anti-bacterial qualities similar to Australian Tea Tree and can be used with all ages, from infant to elderly.

The properties of Manuka have long been known and used by the Maoris and early European settlers to the country. Most often used to treat skin problems, like acne, skin eruptions, eczema, healing stubborn ulcers and wounds, burns, cuts and abrasions, dandruff and oily skin. May help with fungal infections, bacterial infection, tinea, ringworm, athletes foot, body and foot odour. Also beneficial for muscular aches and pains, arthritis, sprains and stiffness, for muscles and joints. It is said, that Manuka supports the body in resisting infection, whilst easing head colds and some respiratory problems. Use in a vaporiser for coughs, colds or flu. Dilute in vegetable oil and dab onto coldsores and dilute in a tumbler or water, gargle and rinse for mouth ulcers.
